Philosophy & Chanting

Ashtānga Yoga is founded upon the Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali.

Sanskrit, yoga’s native language, carries a rich sense of timelessness. Chanting awakens our vitality while bringing depth to our yoga. It is both a meditative practice as well as a solid foundation for the study of yoga philosophy. Unlike āsana practice, chanting, prāṇāyāma, meditation & philosophy continue to improve with age.

Deepen & improve your practice by studying the foundational philosophy of Ashtānga Yoga presented in the Yoga Sūtra. Learn how yoga philosophy applies to practice on the mat as well as life off the mat. The brilliance of Patañjali’s Yoga Sūtras lies in the systematized, insightful & humanitarian manner in which it develops us from beginning to end. The Sūtras teach us how to live extraordinarily healthier & happier lives.

The Yoga Sūtras is the seminal text on Ashtānga Yoga which is synonymous with Rāja Yoga, the Royal Path of Yoga.

[I]f we look into the scriptures properly, understand their meaning, and reflect on them, we will come to know yoga’s true nature… [however] the scriptures only show us the right path. It is left to us to understand them and to put them into practice. By the strength gained through this [Ashtānga Yoga] practice, we can come to know the method for bringing the mind and senses under control. Thus we can achieve yoga.” - Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, Yoga Mala, p. 4 - 5, 2002
