The Yoga Sūtras is an incredibly insightful & practical approach to understanding yoga. There are four chapters. Chapters 1 & 2 lay the basis for the entire yogic process. Chapter 1 gives us the first step, chapter 2 gives the remaining steps to be taken provided the first step is securely in place. Chapter 3 gives more organization to the processes detailed in chapter 2, and chapter 4 (the final chapter) explains how to understand the whole process. Chapter 2, Sādhana Pāda provides us with the nuts & bolts for pursuing yoga.
Chanting awakens our vitality while bringing depth to our yoga practice. It is both a meditative breathing practice as well as a solid foundation for the study of yoga philosophy. Unlike āsana practice which eventually fades into old age, chanting, prāṇāyāma, meditation & philosophy improve as we age.
[I]f we look into the scriptures properly, understand their meaning, and reflect on them, we will come to know yoga’s true nature… [however] the scriptures only show us the right path. It is left to us to understand them and to put them into practice. By the strength gained through this [Ashtānga Yoga] practice, we can come to know the method for bringing the mind and senses under control. Thus we can achieve yoga.”
